46-54 Weight Distribution Ratio

For the first time in F1, a mandatory weight distribution ratio will apply in 2011.

46-54 weight distribution is being implemented in the 2011 season.  What this means to the average person is that the Formula One cars in 2011 and their set up must now abide to a certain axle / weight ratio. Some of the driver's, such as Jenson Button seemed to prefer a heavier forward weight distribution and with the Bridgestone tyres used in the 2010 season, it was required that the car sit with a heavier weight ratio to the rear.

And yet, this regulation will help some of the heavier drivers like Mark Webber.  With height behind him, it will give him the same opportunity to other driver's like Felipe Massa, that have less weight due to a shorter stature.

The even weight distribution in coming into effect primarily due to the use now of the Pirelli Tyres. It is fashioned after the idea that teams in 2009, due to a change in the Bridgestone tyre design, had to make expensive changes to the car's weight distribution to get the tyres up to working temperature.  It has been set to claim that the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) feared the same scenario could unfold again in 2011, and therefore proposed the mandatory weight distribution.

"If the weight distribution remained free, then some would get it right by accident while others get it totally wrong. That's what we want to avoid," said FOTA's technical boss Ross Brawn.

So the FIA and shown us with this new Rule or Regulation set out for 2011, that they are actually possibly trying to help teams.  Yes, there will be some teams that will argue that the individuality of the cars in the races will be lost, but this is a foundation for the new tyres will change.  The FIA always changes their minds.
