Looking To The Future

The 2011 Formula One season has yet to begin even the testing and there are rumours and theories being thrown around.  Who will win, what teams will implode, who to look out for, everything down to what to expect from rookies.  No matter how you crunch the numbers, no one can predict the outcome.  Many may try but there are just too many possibilities with all of the FIA's new rules and regulations.

What we know though is that it is going to be a good season.  Maybe not so much a great season, but a good one all together.  We see the legal introduction of KERS and the 54-46 weight distribution.  Each one alone is hard enough to set up a F1 car for but when both are available to be implemented, we will see teams struggle. The only team that has really been able to get a handle on the KERS system is McLaren.  Sure, they may be at the head of the learning curve but throw in a full fuel tank, added with the extra space and weight of the battery packs associated with KERS and the 54-46 ratio, things will change.

I look forward to seeing the 'mid-pack' teams like Team Lotus and Sauber.  They may not be the favourite to win or even place in the top 5 for constructor's title, but they are meeting the 2011 season head on. Knowing that they will not be able to master the KERS and may actually hinder their driver's these teams are going to fight it out with pure talent alone.  They are also well out of the sight of most other teams and I think that alone will give them the drive and the opportunity to achieve great steps within the paddock and towards the constructor's title.

As for the title leaders, I think that it will be a season of more disrepute.  We think that we saw a lot of back stabbing amongst teams, squabbles amongst drivers and the all out finger pointing, 2011 will the media so much more to gossip about.  It has already started with the reigning world driver's champ.  Everyone seems to want a piece of him.  From Ferrari all the way to Ecclestone.  But Red Bull has that wonderful title clause that has been rumoured to be in his contract. According to Red Bull-owned magazine Speedweek, should the German conclude the forthcoming campaign inside the top three in the title standings and with an unspecified number of victories to his credit, he will not be able to jump ship for 2012.  And if that isn't bad enough, Bernie Ecclestone is liking the idea of him as a son-in-law, “He would be a good son-in-law. He's funny, normal, he has his goals and he is working hard to reach them. I like him very much.”

But enough about rumours now, testing in Valencia starts in a day and a half and the season is less than 40 days away.
