the heading alone may make you want to turn away but this entry has nothing to do with women in the cockpit or even women in the pits. It is hard enough for an over qualified male to get a job in the sport we all love. What this is about is women in the Formula One press.
Each race we flip on the telly and see the Grand Prix Race build up and it is all testosterone driven. Speed has their Formula One Debrief set up with four men, BBC has an all male cast in the main positions as well. Most of the time we can only find the women down in the paddock amongst the drivers and teams, scrambling, trying to find someone to talk with that will boost their stations ratings.
We understand that getting into the paddock with a team is next to impossible and the media is not much better but if Bernie Ecclestone is looking to get more women into Formula One, why not start with the media? Put a woman on a pre-race or post-race show and see just what she can do.
Women do work, and I can guarantee that not all women are hormone driven. We all don't dream about meeting an F1 poster boy or the parties, some of us like to dream about the idea of proving our worth to paddock, to the media, to motorsports in general.
Once you have a starting point to getting women into the sport, than you can look at getting them behind the wheel. Things have to start somewhere...
Maybe it would be a start for the teams to have women who are the team's official spokeperson to those roving pit lane reporters. Get people used to hearing an authoritative woman on the air.
