After watching the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix, the question comes to rise, has Monaco outgrown the Grand Prix?
Sure there have been many races held at the Monaco Street Circuit and yes, there have been many crashes before but in the 2011 race speed was one of the main factors in the collisions witnessed.
There have been many upgrades to the safety features in Monaco but nothing that the city / country can do will help prevent accidents due to driver error and speed.
In complete agreement with the drivers and fans, Monaco holds one of the best races in the Formula One calendar but the technology that can be found in the cars today does not seem to suit the tight, twisty circuit that Monaco provides.
In 2013 there are hopes from the FIA of a new, greener engine in the cars which may suit the track better but with the amount of new tracks entering the calendar in 2012 maybe, just maybe the FIA and FOM should look into removing Monaco temporarily. At least until they can test the new 2013 engines in a tight track.
A few days ago, WTF1.co.uk posted a fantastic and funny read, Lesson time: How to overtake at Monaco but it just gives precedence to the argument before you. With the power of the Formula One engines, Monaco is proving to be dangerous.
We have seen over the last few seasons some bad shunts and crashes, we just do not want to see the drivers injured beyond racing capacity.
Many people may or will disagree with the point of view (I even somewhat disagree), yet when you think about it, on most tracks it is nothing too spectacular to see drivers side-by-side, in Monaco it makes you hold your breath.
Regardless of what argument you put up, F1 will never leave Monaco. It is the power base of many of the people who matter and whilst we are still using money for our values Monaco will stay on the calendar. Long may it continue!
