The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps has always proven to be one of the fan favourites each year on the Formula One calendar and 2011 was no different. The Belgian Grand Prix is know for it's outrageous weather, where it can be pouring rain on one end of the circuit and slicks dry on the other. The 2011 Belgan Grand Prix provided no wet weather action but was full of spills, chills and thrills.
Qualifying in the rain saw Vettel and Hamilton on front row but once the lights turned green, it was Nico Rosberg of Mercedes, leading the race into Les Combe from fifth position. Massa got the jump on Hamilton for third as his Ferrari teammate as able to jump from fifth from eighth.
Being overrun by bad starts, Webber dropped from third to eighth. But the front of the pack was not were all the action was. It looked ominous at the back. Having cars four abreast and after a fantastic qualifying session, Lotus-Renault's Brunno Senna collided with Toro Rosso's Jamie Alguersuari into the first corner. Leaving him a driver through penalty to serve. Timo Glock of Marussia Virgin Racing was also handed a drive through penalty for a collision at race start.
The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is also known to play hard with the mechanics of a car. Being, by far, the longest track on calendar. 2011 saw nearly all the teams had a new threat. Blistering Pirelli's were set to cause much more pitstop action than normal. It was clearly evident as Red Bull had already pulled in Webber on lap three for a set of new tyres.
But the biggest move in the race was on lap 13 when Kamui Kobayashi and Lewis Hamilton collided while coming into Les Combes, sending Hamilton careening down the outside of the track. Resulting in a safety car deployment for three laps.
A few mechanical retirements sought out the remained of the race until McLaren pulled their one remaining driver into the pits on lap 32. Jenson Button came for a new set of tyres and set out to light up the track. As selected, by a poll on on our Facebook Page, we watched Jenson Button become the 'driver of the day'. Taking his fresh set of tyres to the likes of Fernando Alonso (who was 6.8 seconds ahead with nine laps remaining) and to a third place, podium finish.
