Webber Beats Alonso To Win At Silverstone

Mark Webber took victory at a dry but captivating British Grand Prix after passing Fernando Alonso for the lead with four laps to the end of an intense battle between Red Bull and Ferrari.

Alonso led the race until lap 48 when Webber passed the Ferrari around the outside into Brooklands. The move was a long time coming and you could just feel the excitement as Webber pulled his Red Bull beside (and eventually past) the Ferrari.

At race start, it was frantic with a lot of action taking place in the first five laps. Vitaly Petrov failed to take the start after an engine problem, but when the lights went out Alonso defended from Webber, while a bit further back Massa got ahead of Vettel for fourth place. Paul di Resta's race came to a very early end as he clipped Romain Grosjean's front wing. (A right rear puncture spat di Resta off the track and caused enough damage to force his retirement)

A few laps in and it was clear that Michael Schumacher was going to hold his ground and starting backing up the field giving Alonso and Webber a gap (until first pits). It wasn't until lap 11 that the Ferrari of Felipe Massa was able to find an opening and overtake the seven time world champion in to Brooklands using DRS.

A few laps later and Brooklands was the scene of another Pastor Maldonado crash. Sergio Pérez  looked to be attacking Maldonado's Williams (which had just come out of the pits). But the two came together when Perez tried to pass and Maldonado coming into Brooklands, and Maldonado lost the rear of his car, forcing him to run wide in to the side of the Sauber. Maldonado was able to continue after a pit stop but Perez's race was ended. To which Sergio Pérez has since   criticized Pastor Maldonado, labelling him "very dangerous" and calling on the FIA to take action.
"Everybody has concerns about him. He's a driver that has no respect, doesn't know that we are risking our lives and has no respect at all. The way he's driving I think the stewards really have to do something right now because it's not the first time he's done something and he has affected many other drivers, I'm not the only one."

The action continued further down the field well into the closing stages of the 2012 British Grand Prix with Kobayashi locking up when he was pitting and taking out four members of his pit crew. None of the pitcrew were seriously hurt and Kobayashi has since been fined €25,000 for the incident (which the stewards described as "a very dangerous manoeuvre which had potentially serious implications") But this incident saw Kobayashi dropped back into the race just behind a close battle for ninth between Nico Hulkenberg, Bruno Senna and Jenson Button.

But it was Lap 45 when Mark Webber saw his target and the race was on. Alonso managed to hold on for a full two laps before finally succumbing to the inevitable (on lap 48 of 52) as the Red Bull swept round the outside of him at Luffield and raced away to what was ultimately an easy victory.
