After a month long break, the fans were only too happy to see the Formula One paddock land at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Being one of the best tracks in the F1 calendar, the fans did not seem to care that Spa, once again, proved to be a once of the most unforgiving tracks. With a torrent of rain during free practice two, and sun during qualifier, we can only guess what the race may hold. There have even been times that the Belgian portion of the track was soaked with rain and the French portion, blazing sun. Spa-Francochamps is always a guessing game!
As Q1 started, the BBC followed the Marussia around the track. Now the Marussia was not the only car on track but with their young French Rookie, Charles Pic, pulling out the quickest lap in FP2, it seemed only fair. We have all seen (or experienced) the rain in FP2 but for the Marussia fans, seeing their teams name published at the top of the board for times brought a new hope. And hopefully reignited a fire within the team to get some points.
Q1 and a huge surprise as Mercedes', Nico Rosberg failed to make it to Q2. Rosberg could not take higher that P17 and even worse for the German is that he will have to start further back the grid as he was given a five place grid penalty following a FP3 gearbox change. Rosberg stopped on track having only completed five laps of the morning FP3 session, the only dry session of the weekend.
Q2 and all seemed well and quiet. Fans were packed all around the track and BBC was in full force on the television. Many people were extremely happy to hear David Coulthard's voice back on the telly, commentating on the on track action. Then it was spotted. On the cusp of Eau Rouge a few fans were trying to 'assist' the drivers coming into the corner with a piece of advice.
Don't Lift!
End of Q2 and unbelievable (the youngest ever) double world champion was unable to make it through and into Q3. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was out out performed by William's Pastor Maldonado (who made it through with P10). With Vettel ending in P11, this also meant that there were no German driver's in Q3.
Q3 and the shoot out was on. Every driver was out and trying to start the second half of the season in the best place possible. In P1. With ten drivers fighting it out on track, only one would prevail. McLaren's Jenson Button was that man was here at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps circuit, he took is first pole while in the McLaren suit and in his 50th race for the team. this also marks Button's first pole since 2009.
Spa has, once again, shown that Formula One is not a predictable sport. With the grid here in Belgium in complete disarray, there is no way of knowing who will take the win tomorrow on track!
