2010 Formula One Abu Dhabi: Highest F1 Viewership In Several Years.

With the 2010 Formula One season finally at an end, there have been quite a few records set with it.

First we see a new record for the youngest World Champion ever.  We also see a record for the youngest team ever to win the Constructor's Title and finally we see one of the highest rating ever in Formula One history.

Scouring the Internet, trying to find information, I came across some fantastic ratings from around the world.  The results were remarkable.  Casual viewers and die-hard fans alike gathered to watch the thrilling showdown from one of the most spectacular settings on the Formula One calendar.  Many of the die-hard fans would have been kept enthralled by the spectacle being displayed before them as many of the casual viewers may not have realized what they were watching until the checkered flag.  It was history in the making.

The contenders for the most prestigious title to any driver in Formula One also crossed the world.  An Australian, an Englishman, a German and a Spaniard had created such a fan base that spread worldwide that the 2010 Formula One Etihad Airwasy Abu Dhabi Grand Prix captured the attention of the global sports audience.  Even if one of the contenders was not a fellow countryman, there was a wide selection of personalities to associate with and cheer for.

With spectatorship at an all time high, we were even able to see some of the middle field driver's finish the race with some of their best drives all season.  A Russian and a Polish driver out racing not one but two of the title contenders.  A previous World Champion proving that he still has it within him to podium or even a Spanish new driver, getting the highest finish of his first full season. It was a great race to tune in for the first time.

So thank you, to all the driver's and teams for giving up, the fans, the most exciting and boring race to date.

Here are the numbers...

17.9 Million viewers in Spain.
12.1 Million viewers in Germany.
10.6 Million viewers in Italy.
5.6 Million viewers in France.
5.3 Million viewers in the UK.
1.18 Million viewers in Australia.
(Waiting on number's from Canada)

708, 770 viewers in Belgium (thanks for the numbers Liz!)

54 Million viewers in just seven countries.

  1. Pity that the highest viewing figures went to a race which wasn't really that interesting in itself! Not a lot of overtaking or action on track. But it was really exciting because of the title fight!

  2. I haven't heard about the Belgian numbers yet, but I expect them to be low, somewhere between 200.000 - 300.000
Next year F1 isn't even broadcasted anymore on Belgian tv, that says enough I guess...

  3. Really Liz? That seems outragous. I alwasy thought that all of the EU would stand behind the sport forever.

  4. Found the viewership numbers: Dutch speaking part of Belgium: 267.455, that's about what I expected. The viewership in the French speaking part is higher: 441.315. So that makes a total of 708.770 viewers for Belgium. That's better than I expected tbh!
Coverage in Dutch will be history next year, I don't know yet if the broadcasts in French will also disappear. Still, it's a shame :s
